Maintenance

Prune lightly in late spring after new growth hardens; avoid heavy pruning in fall to prevent winter damage.

Cleanup

Apply a 2–3 inch layer of shredded bark mulch over the root zone in late autumn to insulate shallow roots. Ensure the shrub is watered deeply up until the first hard freeze to prevent winter bronzing/desiccation. In highly exposed, wind-swept areas of the yard, consider a temporary burlap screen for its first few Upstate winters.
